Dual Degree PhD with the University of Rome, “La Sapienza”

The Department of Classics offers a Dual Degree PhD stream with the University of Rome, “La Sapienza.” Students enrolled in the Dual Degree stream will spend time at both McMaster and La Sapienza and will have two co-supervisors, one from each institution. Upon successful completion, students will receive the PhD degree from both universities.

Pursuant to a broader MOI between the two universities, the Dept. of Classics is pleased to offer a dual degree PhD in Classics with the University of Rome, “La Sapienza.” In Rome, the dual degree is managed by the “Dipartimento della Scienza dell’Antichità” (Department of the Science of Antiquity), which was recently ranked No. 1 in the world by Quacquarelli Symonds.

The Department is articulated in three sections:

  • Archaeology
  • Philology (Greek and Latin)
  • History-Epigraphy-Topography

The dual degree is open to students interested in these areas. Students are usually expected to spend at least two years at each institution; for many students, the first two years will include coursework and comprehensive exams at McMaster and the following two years spent conducting dissertation research in Rome. Students will be expected to have two co-supervisors, one from each institution. Successful completion of the degree will be recognized as a graduate of both universities.

PhD Coursework and qualifying exams are completed at McMaster and are recognized at La Sapienza. Students should expect to spend at least two years in Rome, usually occurring during dissertation preparation. Applicants may opt to be considered for the Dual PhD Degree stream as part of their application to the Department of Classics at McMaster University.
